McMahon led a team to plan and complete conceptual design for a median-based Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system along the MBTA Key Bus Route 28, one of the MBTA’s top five busiest bus routes. In a multi-agency initiative with MassDOT, the MBTA, and the City of Boston, the team evaluated options to improve the Bus Route 28 to create a BRT corridor connecting the Boston neighborhood of Mattapan to the Ruggles multimodal transit station. The project concept included dedicated bus lanes, new transit stops with amenities, and transit prioritization such as queue jumping and traffic signal priority to speed up service and improve reliability. Provision of an exclusive busway required McMahon to evaluate the impacts of reallocation of a travel lane use in order to balance access needs of general traffic, bicycles, parking, and BRT station access.
