In an effort to assist municipalities in implementing infrastructure projects, for which Safe Routes to School (SRTS) grant money has been awarded, RIDOT has chosen McMahon as one of its consulting firms to provide on-call engineering, planning, and design services for the Rhode Island SRTS program. The on-call contract is 100% federally funded, with a value of $1.1 million, and a construction value of $2.0 million. Project tasks include coordination with the schools, development of “Choose Your Route to School” maps, data collection including traffic counts, speed studies and accident data, observations and recommendations for pickup/drop-off, preparation of Design Study Reports for each school, and design of infrastructure improvements including sidewalks, curb ramps, multi-use paths, school zone signage, crosswalks and pavement markings, and traffic calming elements. The proposed improvements are being designed in accordance with RIDOT standards.
