Upper Uwchlan Township wanted to connect the Village of Eagle to nearby Marsh Creek State Park via an environmentally conscious path and improved roadway to support safe walking, running, biking, and driving.

McMahon provided engineering design and construction management on the 3/4 mile pedestrian path and roadway improvement project between Hickory Park and Marsh Creek State Park. McMahon helped the Township secure $2.2M in federal Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) funds.

The project involved a number of challenges that McMahon worked through during the design including:

• A linear project with a narrow footprint

• Safely accommodating bicycles on the road and pedestrians off the road

• Utility relocation and right-of-way acquisition

• Maintaining traffic during construction

A unique solution incorporated into the project was full depth roadway pavement reclaimation that recycled the old road bed. The project also called for the unique use of pervious asphalt with stormwater infiltration underneath for trail construction to meet permitting requirements in a narrow project footprint. The pervious paving allows stormwater runoff to pass through the trail and be absorbed directly into the ground right where it lands. Sharrow markings and a striped shoulder were provided to give bicycles a space on the road. The result was a safe, beautiful and environmentally-friendly trail for ALL to use.
