McMahon is part of a team providing planning and design services connecting the Southwest Corridor to Downtown Boston, Beacon Hill, Bay Village, Chinatown, and the West End. Through this project, the Boston Transportation Department (BTD) will improve pedestrian crossings, provide comfortable on-street facilities and reasonably direct routes for bicyclists. The project consists of three components of Connect Downtown to enhance bicycle and pedestrian access to the Boston Public Garden and Boston Common, and the Leverett Circle area; Bicycle Network Acceleration Projects on key roadways, and improved crossings of the Southwest Corridor in the Roxbury neighborhood. 


McMahon’s role includes existing conditions data collection on roadway geometry and street features, parking utilization and turnover data collection and analysis, transportation analysis at 33 intersections and three route alternatives, data collection and analysis for 13 Southwest Corridor crossings, and community engagement. The traffic analysis will consist of Synchro evaluations for vehicular operations, traffic stress level evaluations for bicycle operations and delay for pedestrian operations.  The traffic analysis will be used to develop recommendations for lane arrangements and signal phasing and timing adjustments. As part of the community engagement process, McMahon is participating in community walks, open houses and office hours held at local libraries to understand community concerns. The alternatives selected will not only provide on-street bike facilities extending from the Southwest Corridor into Downtown, but improve conditions for pedestrians and transit riders in these areas as well.
