Design and facilitate transit signal priority
Transit signal priority involves programmatically assisting transit vehicles at signalized intersections to keep service on schedule by extending green times and/or reducing the duration transit vehicles are stopped. Priority calls differ from emergency vehicle preemption, which temporarily holds traffic to allow responding vehicles to proceed through a signalized intersection.
Transit signal priority can be established using specialized detectors at the intersection paired with equipment on board the transit vehicle. Our work in designing and facilitating transit signal priority is collaboratively performed with experts in signal design and transit planning who leverage relationships with transit authorities and the state and municipal agencies with signal maintenance responsibilities, where a shared engagement with the challenges and opportunities of transit signal priority can be best achieved.
